This Website is dedicated to the memory of Major John Henry Doxsee. He
began his war adventure at Ft Bragg with the 9th Division, 60th
Infantry. Immediately he was sent to North Africa where he fought on the
beaches of Port Lyautey and around the Kasba. From there he saw more
action in Tunisia at the Battle for Sened, The Battle of Dejebel Dardyss
and the Battle for Maknassy. After Tunisia he was shipped to Sicily
where he helped take the German forces from the island. He was also
witness to Gen Patton's famous "Apology" speech for hitting a soldier.
After the Sicilian campaign, he went on to England for training and
preparation for the D-Day landings. After D-Day commenced, he was a
corner stone in the taking of the Contentin Peninsula. One evening, he
had a meal with Lt John Butts, who was out of rations. This evening
supper of hash turned into Lt Butts "last supper" before his gallant
fight with German forces the next day. Lt Butts did not survive the
fight, but his heroic actions live on in the Medal of Honor citation
awarded posthumously. Heading back to England due to wounds he received,
Lt Doxsee met his future war bride, Doreen Harrison, a spectacularly
beautiful nurse. At the end of the war, John and Doreen were married and
moved back to Durant, Oklahoma. From here they raised a wonderful family
and spent the rest of their lives together.
